The authors' study focuses on three research directions in the literature: operational strategies of low-carbon supply chains, altruistic preferences in supply chains, and coordination of low-carbon supply chains. The results of previous relevant studies are sorted out for the above three research directions.

Among all the factors affecting operational strategies, public policy has a profound impact on low-carbon supply chains, but previous studies have only analyzed operational decisions in the context of carbon reduction policies, but have not considered the possible altruistic preferences of leading firms. In addition there has been extensive literature examining the impact of cap-and-trade systems, mandatory carbon emissions and carbon taxes on low-carbon supply chains however, the existing literature is oriented towards manufacturer-led structures. The study in this paper looks at retailer-led structures and considers the behavioral factors of firms, especially altruistic preferences.

The authors next analyze the literature on altruistic preferences by first analyzing the difference between equity concerns and altruistic preferences in the Stackelberg game and previous research.

Equity concerns are an issue for followers of the Stackelberg game who have less market power in the distribution of profits (or utility) and may be harmed by additional regulation (e.g., carbon emission cuts). Equity concerns are usually negative sentiments about adverse inequities.

Altruistic preferences refer to the Stackelberg game leader's concern for the interests of the dominated party in terms of long-term sustainability, corporate social responsibility, or other reasons.

Finally, in the study of coordination direction of low-carbon supply chains, many studies have shown that altruistic preferences are beneficial to improve system performance and promote coordination, but no study has been conducted to coordinate contracts through altruistic preferences.

As long as the business strategies adopted by enterprises are conducive to carbon emission reduction, the government and consumers can obtain satisfaction from the process, and at this time, the synergy among the government, enterprises and consumers is effective. If, with the collaborative participation of the government and consumers, the business approach is still not conducive to carbon emission reduction, then the synergy is ineffective.

Under the premise that the government and consumers collaboratively participate in the low-carbon development of enterprises, the strategies that manufacturers and retailers choose to develop are inevitably influenced by the government and consumers together, and evolve in the direction that is beneficial to their own development. The strategies that manufacturers can choose are negative development of low-carbon economy and positive development of low-carbon economy, and the strategies that retailers can choose are also negative development of low-carbon economy and positive development of low-carbon economy, resulting in a total of four strategic combinations of (traditional technology, traditional marketing), (low-carbon technology, traditional marketing), (traditional technology, low-carbon marketing), and (low-carbon technology, low-carbon marketing).
